This webpage helps to commemorate and celebrate 40 years of our church and community. Together we have witnessed many momentous moments and events. Since 1977 our church community has both grown and waned and as such, its life cycle is tied to our own.
Over that time, we have taken part in numerous processions, seen the building of the iconostasis, joined in celebrating our 1000 years of Christianity in 1988, to annual commemorations of the Holodomor and reveled in the independence of our homeland Ukraine in 1991.
Each of these occasions was a milestone in our mutual path and today we add one that was unforeseen so many years ago when we opened the church doors for the first time: the visit of our Patriarch Svyatoslav in 2017.
The concert on October 20th, therefore will reflect our traditions, hospitality and a celebration of our united spirit both here and with our spiritual home in Ukraine
For forty years, our Patriarchal church has given us the opportunity to live the very life of God, to be intimately related to God, to be united to Christ, and to have the Holy Spirit dwell within us!
For this we are eternally grateful to Patriarch Josyf, the priests that served the community and the founding fathers, trustees and all those who contributed time and effort for their fellow parishioners.
Наша українська громада в Галифаксі почала розвиватися приблизно в 1948 році і спочатку орендувала приміщення біля церкви Святої Марії, яка також дбала про свої духовні потреби. У наступні роки ми також проводили церковні служби в церкві Св. Бернарда.Оскільки спільнота зростала, ми прагнули придбати наш власний соціальний центр та місце поклоніння.
З часом було виконано одне честолюбство: придбання будівлі, в якій мала місце українська школа, танцювальний ансамбль, хор та жіноча соціальна група. Додавання залу дозволило забезпечити численні спільноти весілля, соціальні танці, поминанні та cвяткуванні.Через десять років у 1977 році нам пощастило, що в самому центрі нашого сусідства церква вийшла на продаж. Як і в соціальному центрі, це було придбано за рахунок коштів населення та особистих пожертвувань. Це була перша Українсько-Католицька Патріарша Церква у світі, і це відкриття відзначалося листом, написаним Патріархом Йосифом
Протягом більше 40 років церква служила духовним домом громади від хрестини до перших причастя на весіллях і, на жаль, за останні роки до занадто багато похоронів. Пізніше ми також відкрили музей, присвячений священику, поетові та культурному активісту Маркіяну Шаскевичу.
Церква виступає як нагадування про те, що наша громада процвітає, поважаючи її традиції, і вічно вдячна Покрови Пресвятої Богородиці, якою Церква віддана. Протягом багатьох років наша парафія показала на прикладі нашу основну східну католицьку віру в те, що наша духовність не просто "рятує" нас від гріха, а активно закликає нас "стати учасниками божественної природи" (2 Петра 1: 4),

The church along with the car-park and adjoining hall were purchased in 1977.
Over the year extensive renovations saw the addition of the iconostasis (around the altar) and a balcony to accommodate the large community of the day.
In time a number of processions were held from the club to the church to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Christianity in Ukraine, the commemoration of the 1932-33 Russian imposed famine on Ukraine as well as remembering those who fought and died for Ukraine.
All of these events are remembered by commemorative plaques which will be removed to a plot in Stoney Road Cemetery, Halifax. The religious artifacts are to be shared amongst other Ukrainian churches within the UK with a final donation to our mother church in Ukraine

Церква разом з автостоянкою та прилеглим залом була придбана в 1977 році. Протягом року на екстенсивних ремонтних майданчиках спостерігалося додавання іконостаси (навколо вівтаря) та балкону для розміщення великої спільноти дня. З часом з клубу відбулася низка процесіцій у церкві з нагоди 1000-річчя християнства в Україні, на честь пам'яті 1932-33 рр. В Україні наклав голод на Україну, а також згадав про тих, хто воював і помер за Україну. Всі ці події запам'ятаються пам'ятними бляхами, які будуть вилучені на ділянку на кладовищі Стоні-роуд, Галіфакс.
Релігійні артефакти повинні бути розділені серед інших українських церков і релігійних благодійних організацій в Україні

The Patriarch came to visit Halifax on October 20th, 2017 as part of his UK tour of Ukrainian parishes. He led a short mass, a 'moleben' which was followed by a concert and dinner at the Ukrainian Hall.

HISTORY
The first Ukrainian club was on Rhode Street in 1952 and was opened as a pub as at that time to open a club wasn’t initially allowed. One of the first organised groups was the chess club which competed against eight English teams and one Lithuanian team. In the first year, the Ukrainian team achieved second place, the Lithuanians received the first; they were very good. The next year the Lithuanian team broke up and the Ukrainians received first place. And when we were playing chess we understood we needed to be able to sell beer. We started to think about it and go ahead by finding out how to open a club.
At that time, many people were coming to see us from other Ukrainian communities and asking advice how to open a club, how to run a business, on what grounds and what the rules were. And we helped other communities to open clubs and civic life improved a little. In Manchester, older Ukrainian immigrants had something similar but it wasn’t connected to SUB. They joined SUB later when the central office approved the idea of the clubs.
At that time, since the end of the 1950's we used St Mary’s RC church for the Ukrainian mass until 1975. We then moved to the Catholic church in Boothtown.
We bought the church on Queens Road in 1977 after we were told we needed 24 house owners to sign their addresses on the registration. We collected those signatures quickly, presented it to the agents, and they registered the church. On 14 October 1977, we opened and sanctified the church. We waited so many years as we wanted a place convenient for us, close to the club so that everyone could visit the church as we moved to our new club on Queens Road in 1962
